Moms Must-Read… and I Haven’t Even Finished It!

If you go to my church, you’ve learning how to be a great leader by following Nehemiah’s example.  (And if you don’t go to my church, visit bvg.org and click on “listen/watch live” to check out the sermon library.)  Well,  I’m currently reading a book called The Passionate Mom: Dare to Parent in Today’s World by Susan Merrill… and it’s also based on the book of Nehemiah.  And friends, it’s a game-changer!  Basically, the premise is that no mom can control her child’s future, but every mom can parent well.

It’s not released yet (but it will be on April 16th!), but I can’t wait till it is so that all my mom friends can read it.  You’ll hear more about my thoughts in future posts and reviews, but for now, let me leave you with this little tidbit:

“Nehemiah was upset because the wall needed to protect the heart of his people – the temple, the dwelling place of God – lay in ruins… The temples that need to be protected today are the hearts of your children.  The foundation for all those little temples is being laid in the home – your home.  And if the foundation is to grow strong, it must be protected from attack.  There must be walls and gates to keep it safe.  How can you, as the wall that protects the heart of your child, be the best you can as a mom?  You must be a strong wall and a wise gatekeeper.”

The author goes on to explain that this book is NOT intended to teach mothers to simply seclude our children from the world in an attempt to protect them from every conceivable danger.  Instead, following Nehemiah’s example, we ought to help build their foundation (because what good is a wall without a strong foundation?) by using the 10 P’s: perception, pondering, passion, prayer, patience, preparation, purpose, planning, problem-solving, and perseverance.

Ladies, if you are a mom, will be a mom, or know any moms… this book MUST be in your library.  It would be an awesome investment of your time, a neat book to read and discuss with other moms (MOPs groups? MOMS Club?), and dads would also benefit from reading it!  Stay tuned for more…
